2) Will status as a Joyce Ivy Foundation applicant or Summer Scholar influence my acceptance to a summer pre-college program?
While the Joyce Ivy Foundation maintains relationships with many of the colleges and universities that offer Approved Pre-College Programs, the summer programs offices at each institution have authority over admissions decisions. Additionally, being named a Summer Scholar does not guarantee a seat in a summer program that is over-enrolled or has a waitlist.

4) Should I also apply for financial aid from the institutions to which I am applying? What if the deadline for financial aid has already passed?
All applicants to the Joyce Ivy Foundation must also apply to the summer program institution for financial aid if the institution makes financial aid available for high school students. For this reason and also because many popular programs quickly reach their enrollment quotas, it is in your best interest to apply to both the summer program and the Joyce Ivy Foundation as early in the process as possible. Financial aid deadlines vary by institution. If your first choice institution does not offer financial aid, or the deadline has passed, your application will still receive consideration by the Joyce Ivy Foundation.

5) What are the criteria used to select Summer Scholars?
The Joyce Ivy Foundation evaluates summer scholarship candidates based on two primary criteria: first, potential to gain admission to an Ivy League school as a full-time undergraduate, which is determined by academic performance in high school and achievements outside the classroom demonstrated by extracurricular school and community activities.. Secondarily, the Selection Committee also looks at financial need based on household income and financial assets.

6) How many scholarships are given each year? What are my chances of being selected?
The Joyce Ivy Foundation is a selective program. The exact number and value of the 2010 scholarships will be determined by multiple factors including the number and quality of the applications we receive, the length and cost of the summer programs, and the amount of financial aid awarded by the summer program institutions.

You may apply in multiple years as long as you continue to meet the Pre-College Program eligibility requirements.

9) What is involved in the application process? How soon will I receive a decision on my application?
It is your responsibility to ensure that all components of your application are complete and received by the Joyce Ivy Foundation before the March 23rd application deadline. The Joyce Ivy Foundation Scholarship Selection Committee evaluates every application against the Foundation’s selection criteria and then ranks the relative strength of each application against all other completed applications received to determine which applicants will be named Summer Scholars and receive scholarship grants.
You will receive a decision on your application no later than April 30, 2010.

10) May I apply for a scholarship to attend a pre-college summer program that is not listed on the Joyce Ivy Foundation website?
The Foundation will consider applications to attend a program outside the Approved Programs list. However, it is the sole discretion of The Foundation to determine that the proposed alternate program is comparable to the Approved Programs in terms of the school’s reputation and standing, academic rigor, format, and purpose. If you would like to petition to attend a program not on the Approved Programs list, send us a link to the program website along with any other information that would be helpful to the Foundation’s Selection Committee in evaluating your request.
In general, the Joyce Ivy Foundation does not provide scholarships for sports camps, on-campus programs that are not taught by faculty of the institution, or study programs outside the U.S.

12) What happens if my first or second choice program is full? May I defer a scholarship award to next year or use it for other purposes?
A scholarship must be used during the summer it is awarded. A Summer Scholar may petition to attend a different summer program in situations where a first choice program is full, but the amount of the scholarship award will not be increased if a longer or costlier alternative program is chosen. Conversely, if a less expensive/shorter duration alternative is chosen, the amount of the summer tuition scholarship award will be reduced to a maximum of the full amount of the alternative program fee if the original scholarship tuition award exceeds the alternate program fee. Program tuition awards are paid directly to the institutions.
